Grammar Exercise – WaywardSundial

If a primary caretaker has a negative attitude toward their child it increases the risk that the child will grow up being aggressive. Children with abusive parents tend to not only be aggressive towards others, but also may have a tendency of harming themselves. The reason for this negative behavior is because the children don’t learn appropriate techniques for handling life’s disappointments. A child may act more innapropriately if they are raised without learning coping skills. According to Dr. Geoffrey Dahmer in “The Bully Papers,” everyone gets the child they deserve.

    1. If a [SINGULAR] primary caretaker has a negative attitude toward their [PLURAL] child it increases the risk that the child will grow up being aggressive. Children with abusive parents tend to not only be [NOT ONLY TO BE] aggressive towards others, but also [BUT ALSO TO HAVE] may have a tendency of harming themselves. The reason for this negative behavior is because [THE REASON IS BECAUSE] the children don’t learn appropriate techniques for handling life’s disappointments. A child [SINGULAR] may act more inappropriately [SPELLING CORRECTION] if they [PLURAL] are raised without learning coping skills. According to Dr. Geoffrey Dahmer in “The Bully Papers,” everyone [SINGULAR] gets the child they [PLURAL] deserve.

—Three times you mix singular nouns with plural pronouns, Sundial. These need fixing every time. The easiest correction is to stay with plurals. Caretakers have negative attitudes toward their children. Children act well if they are raised well. Parents get the children they deserve.
—”The reason is because” is a banned construction.
—Not only /but also constructions are tricky. The rule is that the phrases that follow need to be parallel. For example:

      1. Abused children are NOT ONLY hostile BUT ALSO self-destructive. (2 adjectives)
      2. Abused children NOT ONLY attack others BUT ALSO harm themselves. (2 verb phrases)
      3. Abused children are hostile NOT ONLY to others BUT ALSO to themselves. (2 prepositional phrases)
