  1. 1) We went over dependent and independent clauses.
    2) There is a difference between getting your idea across and getting your 3000 word limit. Don’t just write to hit a word count, write the essay with clarity and brevity to get your point across quickly so the reader does not get bored with the essay.
    3) When talking about the articles don’t just describe what they, summarize what they were saying.
    4) While the Prof. is reading the essays he will be looking for relevant materials. He will also hope that no one is Violating the Academic Integrity.
    5) The Prof. showed us the proper way to cite in text citations.

Brevity and clarity: Do not write to fill a word count. Tell the reader something with every sentence. Avoid repetition and wordiness.

    Magical Dependency

    Independent clauses emphasize claims.
    – “It won’t help them end their addiction.”
    – “It reduces the crime rates in the city.”
The word since makes it dependent. Something else has to occur.

    Dependent clauses minimize objections.
    – “While addicts will unfortunately remain dependent on heroin.”

    Brevity and Clarity of Claims

Make the most of the 3000 words we’re given. If not possible, you simply don’t have enough evidence or support.

Writing to achieve a word count is obvious. Not the best idea. It starts to sound a little ridiculous because you’re trying to stretch your information. Just gather more!

Going in depth with your points and explaining with support would also help.

Telling what a source “talks about” isn’t acceptable. It doesn’t give the value of how important the source is to your topic. “This article compares..” not only sounds better but then gives you the chance to go in depth and actually use the info in the source rather than tell the audience what it “talks about.”

We want to be able to prove our thesis if it’s true.

  4. Nov. 27 Notes
-When you place your information in a dependent clause you make it less effective than if used in a independent clause. Independent clauses emphasize claims.
    -Dependent clauses minimize objections.
-Do not use “talks about.” Don’t describe, purposely summarize.
-Logic must meet the facts for a logical conclusion, when using statistics.

    – Dependents clauses minimize objections.

  6. Learned that independent clauses emphasize claims, whereas dependent clauses minimize objections. I believe this to be helpful because it can lend a hand to our writing so that the focus of a sentence serves a specific purpose that will best serve ones case. Emphasized to not write an unnecessary amount of words. Then went on to learn about techniques on how to make writing be more concise. The technique I liked the most was “don’t describe; summarize” where instead of dragging out a piece of writing describing something, simply summarize it while also including the details so it’s worth it to read. Following, learning how to properly quote a source and how to make it easy for a reader to find exactly what source it is that was quoted. Final due dates were discussed, such as the annotated bibliography and the 3000 word research paper is due next Tuesday.

  8. -Reward the reader with every sentence with something new and insightful. Don’t let the reader believe they are doing more work than the writer.
-Brevity is essential. “Talks about” is weak and ineffective and frankly, the reader don’t care what the article talks about. Use more call to action terms and terms that will hook the reader.
-Paraphrasing authors throughout the writing is effective but must be used properly. See “Revision-Scholarship Plus Minus”
-Ensure the sources in the annotated bib actually leads to what it should lead too.

    • There is very little time left in the semester. The last week of the semester we will meet for 10 minutes to discuss final grades (December 11th and 13th). The last of the work in our portfolios will be submitted next week (December 4th and 6th).
    • Dense and rich paragraphs are important because they do not waste words in an essay. Do not bore your readers by using pointless sentences.
    • Reduce writing to its essential.
    • “The best papers convey the most information, most meaning, in the fewest words.” Prof Hodges. Brevity and clarity are among the most useful techniques to compose powerful papers.
    • Independent clauses (emphasize claims) and dependent clauses (minimize objections).
    • Annotated Bibliography (due 12/04) is a revision of white paper. Make sure it provides argument. Be sure that the link you provide actually goes to what it is supposed to. Do not waste time making your OWN bibliographic references.
    • When citing a quote DO NOT say “talk about,” the reader is not interested in what the article talks about.
    • Make sure all claims made in our research essay have a meaning.
    • Portfolio is 75% the rest of the work we did in the beginning of the semester will serve as the other quarter of our grade. White paper does not matter anymore.

  19. Independent clauses contain the subject, and dependent clauses modify that subject.

“The best papers convey the most information, the most meaning, in the fewest words.” A research paper should be a 10,000 word essay boiled down to the most essential 3,000 words. The arguments should be clear, brief, and non-repetitive.

An annotated bibliography shouldn’t have description of the sources, it should have purposeful summaries. The content shouldn’t be described, it should state why the source is valuable, what it proves.

    Dependent clauses minimize objections.

    Brevity and Clarity:
Write a 10,000 word essay and reduce it into a 3,000 word essay. The best papers convey the most information and clear knowledge in the least amount of words.

Do not write to achieve word count. Wordy essays can easily be spotted. Get rid of the white noise and chatter.

Be on the lookout for claims in the original article. Include a claim in the essential argument portion of the annotated bibliography.

Do not try to shape the facts to suit your theory. Say the fact for what it really is.
