-There is an object in France that defines the mass for the kilogram. Soon there will be a conference to determine the actual mass of the kilogram.
-A study showed that the students who received perfect attendance awards, then started showing up to school less.
-“Because” means “for the reason that.”
    – You can’t put a plural pronoun when a singular is needed. Stay in plural when you can, or get rid of pronouns if possible.
-Use “amount” and “fewer” for things you can’t count, but “number” and “less” when you can count it.
    -“Than” is used for comparisons.
-“Affect” the verb, “effect” the noun.
    -No 2nd person allowed.
-Subjects must agree in number with their verbs.

    – Rule 1: Keep in mind the difference between “They’re,” “Their,” and “There.”
    – Rule 2: Possessives: Do not get confused by the apostrophes. Do not assume that “It’s,” is a possessive because of the apostrophe.
    – Rule 3: Be careful when using “because,” and “that.” Avoid using “the reason is because.”
    – Rule 4A: Do not use male pronouns when a person’s gender is unknown.
    – Rule 4B: Stay in plural when using pronouns. Try to avoid pronouns.
    – Rule 5:
Count Nouns: Use “number,” “fewer,” and “many.”

  6. – On the date of November 13, 2018 there is a link called Punctuation Basics that talks about a variety of rules you should look twice at before submitting.

    – Don’t automatically use a gender when it is unknown

    – Try to eliminate the plurals when possible

    – Use the word number when referring to something that can be counted

    – Make sure to put the comma inside the quote

    – Affect is used with verbs, Effect is used with a noun

    – Went over the Universal piece of metal that weighed 1000grams, but is being discussed again soon due to its apparent false weight

  7. We are 3/4ths the way through the semester, which leads me to want to get all of the things I need for this class done so that I am not rushing to finish things when it is closer to the end. Reviewed the 14 deadly sins of grammar and mistakes that, when made continuously, can result in the failure of the paper. There were examples of correct and incorrect uses for different types of grammar, and how to fix errors.

    -Avoid the reason is because

-When possible create a classification of people
-Use fewer not less for when counting
-Make the plural add apostrophe S

  9. – The original kilogram resides in France and the copy is in Virginia.
-Attendance awards were given to middle school children who then started to miss school. They were awarded for showing up when they didn’t need to. We shouldn’t be awarded for the bare minimum.
    – Know basic grammar: They’re/Their/There, To/Too/Two, You’re/Your, Then/Than, and
Its/It’s. Refrain from saying “the reason is because”.
It is socially insensitive to name any unknown gender as male. We use their and them or
we mix up the singular possessive instead. It is possible to avoid pronouns.
Count and noncount nouns are the words number and amount. Things that can be
counted uses the noun number. Things that cannot be counted uses the word amount.
Use the word fewer, not less, to refer to things that can be counted (with the word
number). You can also use the words many and much. Use the word less for things that
cannot be counted (with the word amount.)
    Also synonymous for also.
Periods and commas go inside quotes.
Affect (the verb) and Effect (the noun).
When using quotes, always use double quotes. Single quotes are used when a quote is
    within a quote.
    No using “you”.
When a singular word is possessive, use “‘S”. When more than one person is possessive,
then use “S'”. If there is a double S and is sounds weird don’t use it. With words that
already have an S at the end, add another S if you can hear the S when you say it out loud,
basically always add an S to a name.
Use whom if you can replace it with him or her. Use who for a sentence you can replace it
    with she or he.

  13. The 14 rules of grammar are necessary to being a functional writer in society. The rules should never be broken, and it’s possible to fail by breaking these rules. Improper grammar can turn off a reader, by either offending them, or making them believe the writer isn’t intelligent.

The revision process should tear to shreds the original draft. Most of the essay should be unrecognizable from the original draft.

    • The definition of a kilogram is an object that is in France.
    • Perfect attendance awards given to students in the middle of the school year, the result after the award was given was students stopped attending school.
    • We are ¾ of the way through the class. Class 21 is today and we have 30 total classes (last 2 not actual classes).
    • Begin looking to rewrite each of the arguments already written, not much time left to do so.
    • Grammar is going to become more important in the rewrites.
    • Sentences as well as structure needs to change a lot in order for it to become a rewrite.
    • 14 rules of grammar that we can fail for (FFG). Do not make these mistakes in revisions. Link for all of the rules on Tue Nov 13 class agenda.
    • Rule 9. Affect/Effect
    • Effect is a noun, affect is a verb. Examples of each: The cold does not affect me. The cold has no effect on me.
    • Rule 11. We use double quotes the only time we use single quotes is when a quote falls inside of another quote. Example: “All our restaurants offer ‘healthy’ menu items,” Ray said.

    PERFECT ATTENDANCE
-Students who had perfect attendenc were not rewarded for doing so, leading to students coming to school less.

    GRAMMAR

    Don’t Make These Mistakes:
    -THEY’RE *they are*
    -THEIR *possesive*
    -THERE *adverb*
    *they’re all completely different words*

Today in class we reviewed common grammar mistakes to ensure we don’t fail our final essays due to poor grammar. My personal issue: Affect vs. Effect

-AFFECT=verb “The could does not affect me”
-EFFECT=noun “The could has no effect on me”

Within a week after thanksgiving everything should be complete.

    rewrite definition, causual, rebuttal

For pronouns try to switch up the pronouns between male and female.

Instead of using they try he or she.

Or try to eliminate the pronoun all together.

Affect is a verb and effect is a noun

  20. -You’re not doing a rewrite if 95% of your work stays the same
-You need singular pronouns that aren’t gendered, but there are none. “One” and “it” sound dumb, but can be used.
-Don’t mix a single noun with a plural pronoun. Mix genders up. Or just stick with plurals
-Singular noun can’t be represented by “they”. Again, it’s easier to use plurals. You can mix up genders, too.
-Effect is a noun. To affect something is to change it, so it is a verb
-Always use double quotes. Even for a few words. Only exception is when a quote falls inside another quote
-make the plural first then add ‘s (boys’, women’s) if it looks stupid, get rid of the s
-for names, let your ear be your guide. If you would say it would an ‘s, write it with an ‘s
-body, one, or thing is singular. Only plural is all

We are now ¾ thru the first semester

Definition, causal, rebuttal essay all should get rewrites. Grammar takes on more emphasis as we move from draft to draft. Sentences should change and if 95% of your essay still remains it is not an efficient enough rewrite.

First draft of 3000 word essay due after thanksgiving.

Looked at visual rhetoric assignments, for rewrites.

    Rules of grammar:
#4A – Can’t say “reader will lose their place” can say “reader will lose his/her place.”
#4B – Avoid gender all together with plurals
#9 – Difference between effect and affect. Affect (verb) and effect (noun).
Affect: The cold does not affect me.
Effect: The cold has no effect on me.
#11 – Double quotes for everything. Only exception is when a quote falls inside another quote. If this is the case then single quotes should be utilized.
    #13 – boy’s mitt → boys’ (plural)
#14 – Subject verb agreement. Word closes to the verb that dictates what is being talked about.
Anything with a body, one, or thing is singular. All is plural.

  22. – Surprisingly, those who had perfect attendance awards in middle school started to not show up to class later on because students began to not care about attendance as these awards are easily given out and are not exemplary.

    – Rules for Grammar:

    – Rule #2: All possessive pronouns end with an “s” without the apostrophe while the rest of the words end with an apostrophe and follow up with an “s.”
    – Rule #4: The use of one gender throughout an entire work is discouraged due to social insecurities. The use of plural pronouns over singular ones is prohibited. Two ways to solve this issue is to 1) mix an entire writing piece with “he” and “she” pronouns and 2) to avoid pronouns all together while possible.

    – Rule #11: Singular/Double Quotes
    – Rule 1. If there is a quote, use double quotation marks.
    – Rule 2. If there is a quote within a quote with double quotation marks, use singular quotation marks.
    – Rule 3. If there is a quote within a quote with singular quotation marks, which is in a quote with double quotation marks, follow Rule 1.

    – Rule #13: To switch to a plural and have a possessive, “simple rule”: change to the plural and then add an apostrophe following up with an “s”. If it’s an “s” followed with an apostrophe followed with an “s,” it can be kept or if it “looks stupid” drop the last “s.”
    – Rule #14: “Everybody, everyone, everything, anybody, anyone, anything, somebody, someone, something, nobody, no one, nothing” are all singular. The only plural is “all.”
