  1. – Find research sources to write white paper.
    – If someone previously proved your hypothesis, you have to look for a flaw and investigate the flaw in their argument. It is a benefit to find it and fix the arguement.
    – Instead of finding someone that agrees with you, find people that don’t or do not have the hypothesis. Upend the common knowledge instead of proving common knowledge.
    – Researh to find something new instead of adding a source to an already proven idea.
    – The hypothesis will be continuously improved and will always be better than the first one.
    – The white paper needs at least five sources that link together. The bibliographic data needs to be written and puporsely summarized.
    – The research tips are useful in finding sources and writing.
    – if no one has written about your topic, it’s a good thing. Give a related example instead of trying to find direct testimony.
    – The process is: wanting to prove thesis, search public opinions, not finding direct sources, then find sources from a different perspective.

  2. – Use Google Scholars and quotes to find specific articles and phrases.
    – Use Campbell Library to find journal articles.
    – Good citations identify the author, the title, said language, and the quotation. TASQ technique. This is the simplest way to cite articles and it is informal.
    – There are many ways to quote an article and they can all fit into your paper in a smooth way. You can start with saying the author says or you can start with the quote. Quotes can also be incorporated into the sentence and you don’t always need to incorporate the publication. We need to to enough of the informal citations for the reader to find the source in the bibliography.
    – The comma or period go inside of the quote and the sentence has to be grammatically complete. If the quote is capital, you need a comma before the quote after the said language. Sometimes you can’t here the quote. Commas also come if the title interrupts the sentence.
    – Commons separate nonessential information or the interrupting part of the sentence.
    – Think about topic, talk about topic, find researchable topics that may not be in thesis, use search database, read the value of both sides of the arguement, ignore unsavory opinions.
    – Wikipedia is a way to find many sources that you would not expect to find.
    – Research papers need to be specific, arguable, researchable, and verifiable.
    – Our court system sucks.

  3. Today we talked about research techniques and it’s a good thing if you can’t find sources. Not finding sources just means you have to look further or in a different place to support your thesis. We talked about an example in class and how they could never find anything to support there thesis directly. The author was talking about the West Baptist Church but in order to support his thesis about them, he had to search for celebrity endorsements.
We also talked about the correct way to do good citations. Using the TASQ technique, Title, Author, Said, and the Quote. You could also paraphrase instead, so there would be no need for quotation mark.
You have to make sure your hypothesis is specific, arguable, researchable, verifiable.

  4. “I can’t find any sources”-Great! Take a look at things you may not have intended to, looking for sources that only agree with your hypothesis is ok, but not to just point to there work and give congratulations. Finding a weakness in their argument however and repairing it, is a good approach. Find analogies that may benefit your argument.

  5. Talked in the beginning about where we are in the course, and what needs to be done especially with the white pages. Tips for researching topics were given, such as instead of typing in a direct relation to ones topic, instead search about things that can potentially relate to it in a form that is completely not associated with the hypothesis that is trying to be proven. While thinking about topics for ones hypothesis, take note of questions you may have such as branching topics that can still be applied to the hypothesis and what is trying to be proven. There is also so many resources available to us, such as the library, internet, and Rowans “academic sources” online. Also talked about citations and ways to do it correctly. With the hypothesis and white paper, we discussed what needs to be done by next Wednesday, such as write what our hypothesis is, 5 sources and how they benefit ones hypothesis, so that the white paper can begin its creation where it will eventually be a fully-fledged, well written essay.

You research To find something new, not to find something that is already true

If I can’t find any sources for my topic, try to recreate another one

When searching on google for sources, use quotations around a particular phrase relating to my topic

A way to get free scholarly articles, use the link of Rowan’s Campbell Library in the research tips link within the date of September 27, 2018

If I need more sources, use Wikipedia and scroll all the way down to find an abundant amount of sources related to the topic

Always put the period and comma inside the parenthesis of a quote

Use the good citation mechanics link if I need to overlook my citations that need work

Prove and write about the content of each of my 5 sources of how it relates to my topic

should have solid hypothesis and begin looking into research
make sure you make a contribution to argument rather than just showing someone else has already proved it
doesn’t matter if you cant prove your hypothesis as long as you prove something
look for sources and research on your topic not thesis
when doing research d you don’t always have to search for the direct subject but tailor your search for related subjects that can be used to help prove your cause.
use google scholar to help search
if article you are looking for cost money you can use rowan library search engine. the publication may be available for students for free
remember to talk about your topic with others or the prof
good way to find source is Wikipedia. ignore the actual article on Wikipedia but if there are a lot of sources cited you can use them.

when citing in your essay use the title author said language and quote format to cite your source. (or some version of)
title – title of article/book/podcast etc

    author – who wrote it
said language – author said this, author argues this, author claims this etc
quote – quote or paraphrase you want to use.

-Always a way around the fact that you cannot find a source to back your thesis. Campbell library is a good source as well as wikipedia could help refocus your thinking.
-In his article, “Stone Money,” Milton Friedman said “money is fiction.” Title, Author, Said, Quotation. Quoting directly, simple quotation.
-Avoid too broad and vague. Having a narrow framework helps the argument and overall success of the paper. Makes the hypothesis verifiable if opinions are not influencing the thesis.

  9. NOTES:

Next Wednesday the first draft of the white paper task is due before midnight.

Just because someone thinks their hypothesis is true doesn’t quite prove that it is. You research to find something new not something that’s already been proved. If you can’t find any sources let it encourage you. You can find sources using google scholar and rowan library.

Don’t just focus on one thing when researching. Shift your focus to different things so you can create new areas for research. Think about your thesis until you start to raise questions that can be researched by searching something other than one focus. Use google scholar for sources. If you have to pay for an article of unknown value you can enter the title into the search engine for rowan’s Campbell library, for free. Wikipedia surprisingly is one of the best inventions we have today when it comes to information. They show so many sources that can be used for research.

DO NOT put periods on the outside of your quotation marks. Commas as well. “Never never never.”

Good citations include the author, a quotation, and also have SAID language.

If we pitch a topic that is too broad, hard to research, impossible to argue or verify, Professor Hodges will respond with a request for further refinement of the hypothesis. Create a controversial premise, and a narrow framework for argument. Choose researchable evidence, and hypotheses that can be quantified. Avoid hypotheses with vague terms, and with unverifiable conclusions.

Sources should include: Title with link to material, the essential content of the article, and what it proves.

  10. Sep. 27 Notes
-We don’t care if our original hypothesis is true. Using research we can find the opposite or another hypothesis is true. Just agreeing with other sources is not proving anything.
-When you can’t find any sources that match your hypothesis, that’s a good thing. It means no one else has proven that yet.
-WBC example: This person could find no sources about pubic opinion about WBC. They then searched “celebrity endorsements” in Google Scholar and found an article about retail management. If it costs money for the source, you can go to Rowan’s Campbell Library.
You could also look at the references at the end of a wikipedia page.
-Good Citations – Periods and comma ALWAYS go inside the quotation marks. We can use the author, title, quotation, said, quotation technique. This technique can be used in many ways.
-White Paper – You will describe how you will go about researching your thesis. You don’t need to prove something that has already been proven. Has to be researchable and verifiable. Avoid naming a topic instead of a hypothesis. Avoid survey proposals. Create a controversial premise.
-To make hypothesis arguable, avoid to broad of an argument and too vague an argument. Create a narrow framework for argument.
-To make a hypothesis researchable, avoid arguments about people’s feeling or beliefs and arguments that won’t be settled in our lifetime. Choose researchable evidence.
To make a hypothesis verifiable, avoid vague terms and unverifiable conclusions. Choose hypotheses that can be quantified.
For the sources, write about the essential content of the article and what is proves. Avoid saying why this source proves your thesis.

  12. – Stop looking for resources to support your hypothesis. Use research to prove something new, instead.
    – Sometimes, it is difficult to find specific resources to support your thesis because the process of research you are using is not the ideal. You do not necessarily need an article that discusses your thesis explicitly, you may need to connect various abstract arguments to your thesis.
    – It may sound counterintuitive that rebuttal arguments can help you support your sources.
    – Citations:
    · Commas and periods go inside the quotation marks. “Stone Money,”
    · Include title, author, said, quote (T, AS, Q).
    – Commas can act as parenthesis.

We looked into a thesis from a few semesters ago. Not finding direct evidence isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We just need to revise our research methods. The effect of an endorsement of some party effects the reaction of your audience. Some love it and some hate it.

Sometimes you need to change your process in order to find a way to combat your thesis. Talk about thesis until I start to raise questions that I could search for to help my thesis.

Use Google Scholar to potentially get the answer you need for your thesis.

Never count out articles if they don’t necessarily share your thesis. You can take out the parts you don’t need and boil it down to an essence you can use to further your thesis.

If you ever become desperate enough to use Wikipedia try to use the articles at the bottom the page in the references.

Never ever put the punctuation outside the quotation. Punctuation is always inside the quotation.

    “In the article…”
    Title: “…Stone Money…”
    Author: “…Milton Friedman…”
    Said: “…said…”
    Quote: “…”Money is fiction.””

These can be mixed up in any way in order to provide a direct quote.

-Avoid naming a topic instead of a hypothesis

    -Survey proposals.

-Avoid to broad of an argument

-Avoid to vague of an argument

-Avoid arguments about peoples’ feelings or beliefs

    Things to do:

I’m concerned that you think: “Punctuation goes inside quotation marks.”
      This is untrue.
Periods and commas go inside the quotation marks, but question marks and semicolons, for example, depend on the quotations.

Professor Hodges asked “Who’s happy today?”
Did Professor Hodges say, “I’m happy today”?
Did Professor Hodges ask, “Who’s happy today”?

      Both the above are correct.
The first is correct because the quote is a question.
The second is correct because the entire sentence is a question.
The third is correct because both the sentence and the quote are questions.

      Is that clear?
If not, please ask in class.
